Guest Speaker: Chandramani Shrivastava

Chandramani is a Principal Geologist leading the Geology Domain for Schlumberger Drilling & Measurements comprising of Image Logs and Cuttings Evaluation. He obtained his Masters of Technology degree in Applied Geology from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee (India) in 2002 and is working with Schlumberger since then. He has worked in India, South East Asia, Middle East and West Africa in different roles before moving to US; and published more than 70 technical papers in International Conferences and Workshops related to geological interpretation, innovative workflows and new technologies.

Chandra has extensive experience of integration of image log in various workflows for reservoir characterization and production. He holds another Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot Watt.

Abstract:

Borehole images have been utilized in real-time while drilling with LWD tool, often aiding in steering decision for optimum well placement, geological structural interpretation and intelligent completion design. Different borehole image technologies have been developed and deployed for while drilling environments, however, the application which requires high resolution imager in OBM remains limited.

Industry’s first LWD Dual-physics Imager comprising of ultrasonic and electromagnetic measurements, is recently deployed with high resolution capabilities in OBM environment. Three full-bore images can be acquired simultaneously; apparent resistivity, ultrasonic amplitude and ultrasonic transit time. The resistivity images provide rich information in the bedding features while the ultrasonic images are more sensitive to the near wellbore fracture and borehole conditions. This innovation LWD tool combines the complementing nature of the high-resolution ultrasonic and electromagnetic image technology without introducing complexity to the drilling bottom-hole assembly (BHA).

This presentation includes various examples from the field-test data in different downhole environment and geological settings. A comparison with the established high-resolution borehole imaging technology on wireline further suggests the excellence of this LWD dual-physics OBM image capability. The examples demonstrate the high-resolution images that can be seamlessly utilized in the geological and petrophysical workflows and enables accurate interpretation in OBM environment.
