Guest Speaker: Avon McIntyre

Avon McIntyre is a field geologist masquerading as a petroleum geologist. After finishing his PhD in New Zealand on onshore Taranaki Basin stratigraphy, he joined Australian Geological Survey for 4 years and spent much of it wrecking 4WD’s while mapping and sorting out outback geology in central Australian deserts. Then 2 years with PGS as a seismic interpreter before joining Shell in Australia in 2008 ago as an Explorer, with a stint in the Netherlands for a few years in unconventional new ventures. Avon is deeply interested in geological processes and how they affect prospectivity – particularly lacustrine basins and depositional systems, carbonate processes, stratigraphic traps and unconventional plays.

PESA WA invites you to our May technical luncheon with guest presenter Avon McIntyre.

“Bursting Source Rocks and Strange Hydrocarbon Occurrences Around the World”

Presented by Avon McIntyre

Abstract:

In recent years the Unconventionals business with its focus on source rocks has greatly improved our understanding of maturation, migration and charge timing. Integrating these insights to conventional exploration can help us explain some puzzling hydrocarbon occurrences. These range from shallow un-biodegraded oil discoveries to problematic trap timing and strange subsurface pressures.

This talk will cover some lessons from unconventional exploration where the concept of ‘bursting source rocks’ has been hypothesised. Avon will attempt to use it as an alternative mechanism for some of the more difficult-to-explain oil and gas fields in the world, and how we may need to re-think our charge timing assumptions.
