PESA WA: December Christmas Luncheon and Party – The thoughts of Chairmen Greg and Larry – where has the industry been and where are we going?

Thursday, December 12 @ 12:00 - 17:00

Event Categories:

Guest Speaker: Greg Smith and Larry Tilbury

Larry Tilbury recently retired as Principal Geophysicist with Woodside after a career spanning 45 years in the petroleum industry. A BSc (Hons) graduate of UWA in Physics and Mathematics, his first 10 years as a geophysicist were in the BMR Marine Group on acquisition, processing and interpretation. He spent the next 35 years with Woodside, working as an interpreter in exploration and development on the North West Shelf of Australia and the Gulf of Mexico involved in most of Woodside’s discoveries and developments.  His last assignment was in the Pluto Development Subsurface Team with the high res Pluto 3D and 4D seismic. His main interests remain 3D and 4D interpretation, image processing and inversion studies for reservoir characterisation but now he can spend more time with Fremantle Surf Lifesavers Club and his 9 grandchildren when he is not travelling to conferences for SEG, ASEG, PESA, and EAGE.

Greg Smith is Adjunct Professor of Petroleum Geology at Curtin University. He only has 44 years’ experience in petroleum geology, geophysics and geochemistry at Exxon, ARCO, BHP, Woodside/Shell and Herman Research Laboratory. Initial 3D modelling of basins, sediments and organic geochemistry was followed by successful coal, oil shale and petroleum exploration including several major discoveries and field developments for large projects in Australia and overseas. Greg is supposed to be semi-retired but spends most of the week doing fun research with Honours, Masters and PhD students on interpretation of large seismic, well log, core and production datasets, building 3D models of sedimentary basins or petroleum fields, using machine learning and multi factor scenario modelling. Special interests include low T-P burial and thermal history modelling, organic petrology and reservoir characterisation. Greg has points on Larry by being a great grandfather and is a member of too many societies to travel to all their conferences including AAPG, PESA, TSOP, ICCP, AusIMM (past corporate member) and has held various positions in GSA, PESA, APPEA and ASA.

PESA WA invites you to our December Christmas Luncheon and Party – Thursday 12th December. Petroleum industry advances over 50 years: how new technology disrupts old ideas – or – The thoughts of Chairmen Greg and Larry – where has the industry been and where are we going?

Guest Speakers: Greg Smith and Larry Tilbury

Larry and Greg are old enough to have seen profound changes in our industry but young enough to still dream of many more to come.

Charles Lyell’s principle of Uniformitarianism – the past is the key to the present – is a good starting tenet for geos but as Charles Darwin showed we must all evolve or become extinct!  Many textbook petroleum ideas have stood the test of time but others have been overtaken by new technology. The process of change in our lives seems much faster than previously and new technology has profound implications for the petroleum industry and the planet.

We’ll reminisce with some old examples that will make your eyes water and some new examples that make our pacemakers race. Our ideas about basins, traps and hydrocarbon movement – their mechanisms and rates – have been revolutionised by new data and complex computer modelling. Many success stories exist using modern 3D and 4D seismic, inversion techniques, deep or long drilling with geosteering, real-time computer scenario modelling, insitu field production monitoring, machine learning of big datasets, DNA type sequencing, isotope analysis, plus the latest insitu nano-scale organic SEM analysis for sweet spot analysis – and we might be game enough to show some without vetting by corporate!

Note: Your ticket entitles you to join us for an afternoon of networking drinks at  Metro Bar and Bistro, 33 Mounts Bay Rd,
