Following the 2017 election, the new WA state Government implemented changes to many government departments including the previous Department of Mines and Petroleum, which is now known as the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. Despite these changes, the 130 year old Geological Survey of WA still exists within the Geoscience and Resources Strategy Division and continues to deliver new pre-competitive data and looks after vast physical geoscience collections and digital geoscience data.  GSWA aims to improve the geological understanding of Western Australia by providing geoscientific data to the petroleum and mineral exploration industries to help reduce exploration risk. There is a wealth of geoscience information available to the petroleum industry through GSWA such as the Carlisle Core Library, the HyLogger Spectral Scanner (virtual core library), the GSWA Fossil Collection, WAPIMS, GeoVIEW.WA, eBookshop, WAMEX, EIS pre-competitive data acquisition and EIS co-funded drilling initiative.

The Energy Geoscience and Carbon Strategy Branch publish reports focussing mainly on onshore WA on stratigraphy, structure and elements of petroleum systems such as source and reservoir potential, of the sedimentary basins. The Digital Core Atlas is a new innovative product developed by the branch, with the first 2 released products showcasing core analysis results in wells in the Canning Basin. All publications are available to download freely from the eBookshop which houses almost 5000 books maps and data packages. Recent work has focussed on the Canning, Carnarvon, Perth, Officer and Amadeus Basins. In the last 12 months new pre-competitive projects include acquisition of the 872 km long Kidson Sub-basin deep crustal 2D seismic survey (co-funded with Geoscience Australia), release of an updated Canning Basin SEEBASE model and reprocessing of selected vintage 2D seismic lines in the Canning and Carnarvon Basins.
