Structural Interpretation of Australian Sedimentary Basins

Australia’s sedimentary basins contain a wide variety of interesting geological structures.  Although they are often exceptionally well imaged on seismic data, they can be open to a variety of different interpretations.  This course will consider the principles of interpretation of different structure styles and will use practical examples from the Northern Carnarvon, Perth, Browse, Petrel, Bremer and Bight Basins to discus the implications of different interpretations for the evolution of the these different parts of the Australian continental margin.

Course outline:

Thursday 8 June:
Crustal scale extensional fault systems:  Bremer and Bight Basins
Multiphase extension: Northern Carnarvon Basin
Friday 9 June:
Inverted fault systems: Perth Basin
Strike-slip fault systems: Browse Basin
Salt tectonics – response to extension and inversion: Petrel Basin
Participants must bring a full set of colour pencils, an eraser and pencil sharpener with them for some good old fashioned seismic interpretation!
