A review of the hydrocarbon prospectivity of the Late Triassic of the Roebuck Basin

Claudia Valenti

A recent regional study of the Roebuck Basin has been completed revising the prediction of reservoir, seal and source rocks within the basin. This study delivered not only key regional and semi-regional maps and palaeogeographies (within a sequence stratigraphic framework) but a refined understanding of hydrocarbon generation and prospectivity within the basin.
New geochemical analyses of the Upper Keraudren Formation of the Anhalt-1 and Hannover South-1 wells of the Rowley Sub-basin identified fair to good source rock potential within the carbonate platform. It is postulated that these Late Triassic marine clastic/carbonate source rocks will be better developed in the mapped mini-basin to the south of these wells, analogous to the marine sequences of Sulawesi, the Birds Head area of Indonesia/West Papua and onshore Timor.
Basin scale mapping with burial history modelling match the existing well results and have identified areas where these Late Triassic source rocks have generated hydrocarbons, re-rating and refocussing exploration within the Roebuck Basin.
