Guest Speaker: Simon Sturrock

Dr Simon Sturrock is a consultant geoscientist specialising in Sequence Stratigraphy for the purpose of better understanding basin evolution and sedimentary fill for reservoir and seal prediction. He has an extensive knowledge of practical sequence stratigraphy and is highly experienced in applying these skills to field appraisal and development, exploration prospect and play fairway evaluation and risk analysis.  He holds a proven track record in accurately predicting reservoir, source and seal distribution, which has substantially reduced costs and assisted in the discovery of commercial hydrocarbons.

After completed a PhD at the University of Exeter on the sedimentology of a modern transgressive depositional system, Simon joined The Natural History Museum in London where he studied Tertiary Larger Foraminifera from Pakistan. He joining BP as a Biostratigrapher and worked on many basins around the world, especially the Americas N & S and the North Sea.

After 7 years immersed in microfossils Simon took the opportunity to become a Seismic Stratigrapher for BP.  He worked on unravelling depositional systems and the structural evolution of basins in Vietnam and China.  Simon left BP in 1994 to pursue a career as an independent consultant and has since worked for over 20 oil companies and two NOCs in many basins around the world.

In 1999 Simon established STRAT TRAP Pty. Ltd., a successful Perth based seismic and sequence stratigraphic consultancy.

Between 2003 and 2014 Simon ran the technical office in Perth for Octanex Limited, as their consultant exploration manager. In this role he oversaw the exploration of a large portfolio of permits in Australia and New Zealand, resulting in their profitable farmout.

Lithostratigraphy to Sequence Stratigraphy: How far have we come and where are we going?

Simon Sturrock (Strat Trap Pty Ltd)

Lithostratigraphy is widely used in the oil industry, but is it appropriate for today’s exploration and development needs? Sequence Stratigraphy, on the other hand, has evolved into a predictive tool for interpreting and interrogating diverse geologic data sets and for communicating ideas, but how best to utilise it to understand basin fill history, resolve it’s structural evolution and define plays and still keep a connection on Lithostratigraphy?  Finally where is Sequence Stratigraphy heading; a look at recent developments, but are we losing its predictive capability?
