Petroleum prospectivity of Cainozoic to Recent volcanism in offshore Vietnam and Australia

John D. Gorter

Observations of volcanic facies in onshore basaltic strata may be transferable to petroleum exploration of offshore volcanic edifices revealed by seismic surveying and limited drilling of petroleum test wells. This study will use porosity networks observed in southern onshore Vietnamese volcanic facies and offshore 2D and 3D seismic surveys to suggest that deliberate targeting of volcanic edifices offshore Vietnam and the South China may result in the discovery of additional economic hydrocarbon accumulations. Using this Vietnamese experience coupled with an extensive literature, from overseas and locally, the prospectivity of volcanoes in the Australian offshore is examined and some broad observations advanced.
