PESA Vic/Tas November Technical Meeting – Otway and Gippsland Basin Stratigraphic and Structural traps defined by AVO responses

Wednesday, November 22, 2017 @ 12:00 - 14:00

Guest Speaker: David Ormerod

Currently consulting with Clearview Oil and Gas and non executive board member with Gunsynd PLC an AIM listed investment company. Founded Antilles Oil and Gas and entered into acreage in Peru. Founder of the Pura Vida and responsible for entry to Morocco ahead of the industry and subsequently farmed out to FreePort McMoran for two wells, total value $230M. Entry to Gabon and Madagascar deep water blocks. Worked at Karoon where he was responsible for entry into Santos Basin Brazil where Karoon successfully farmed out to Pacific Rubiales and subsequently drilled three wells two of which were significant discoveries. Further to Brazil David was responsible for entry to Peru where Karoon has offshore and onshore acreage. At Woodside David managed the GoM team where Woodside entered into a number of new blocks in the Eastern and Central GoM as well as the Neptune Field with BHP. At BHP David worked a variety of regions including GoM, West Africa, SE Asia, Brazil, and was involved in multiple deep water wells drilled in variety of settings including same styles to target countries. He was a part of the partnering with oil majors in number of JV’s including Exxon, Shell, BP.

Clearview Oil and Gas has consulted to 3D Oil on its Gippsland and Otway Basin acreage and has found through careful AVO analysis and review several interesting amplitude relate anomalies with fit to structure and meaningful economic potential.

Gippsland Basin has proven a difficult Basin for AVO analysis dues to the presence of hard sands and low GOR or dead oil. In the gas case however there has been some success with AVO being of assistance in recognition of the Kipper and other Northern Margin fields. In VIC/P57 regional trends have been modelled and hose trends used to make a predictive model which is compared to the anomalies seen in the data. In VIC/P57 the presence of hard sands give rise to peak events that with the addition of gas go through a polarity reversal at near offsets to large trough events on the far offsets in a similar way to that seen in the North Sea.

The Otway Basin has seen AVO used more commonly than Gippsland with identification of simple Class III anomalies in the Thylacine and Geographe fields though the method has seen pitfalls with variation in the reservoir rock properties across the basin. In T49P regional trends have been modelled by DownUnder Geosolutions and those trends used to make a predictive model which is compared to the anomalies seen in the data.
