PESA Vic/Tas evening event – The Geology of Scotland and the Stratigraphy of Whisky

Friday, February 8 @ 18:00 - 21:00

Guest Speaker: Chris Elders

Chris Elders is a geologist whose PhD field area was in Scotland and he drinks whisky

It is possible to fit Scotland almost three times into Victoria, yet it contains rocks in outcrop from every period of geological time form the Archean to the Neogene (even if all that remains of the Cretaceous is a single block of Chalk that had fallen in to a granitic intrusion on the Island of Arran).  It just happens to have been in the right place at the right time to experience many of the rift events and orogenies that have affected NW Europe.  This fascinating geological history is recorded in Scotland’s dramatic landscapes which in turn provides the differing terranes on which barley is grown, peats develop and through which the all important waters drain to provide the raw materials for creating whisky.  We will wander through 2.7 billion years of earth’s history, pausing to see if we can taste the difference between Neoproterozoic passive margins, Silurian accretionary complexes, Devonian post-orogenic basins, Carboniferous rifts and Palaeocene volcanics in the whiskies they have produced.
