PESA SA/NT September Technical Luncheon

Adventures on the High Seas – Uncovering the Secrets of the Bight and Mentelle Basins during IODP Expedition 369

When: Thursday 27th September, 12pm for 12:30

Where: Club Braggs at The Public Schools Club, 207 East Terrace, Adelaide SA 5000

Speaker: Carmine Wainman, Australian School of Petroleum, University of Adelaide

The Bight and Mentelle Basins are amongst the most underexplored regions of offshore Australia. Their location in deep water, together with limited wellpenetration and the sparsity of seismic data meansthere is a high degree of uncertainty regarding the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and ultimately the geological evolution of these basins. Between the 26thSeptember and 26thNovember 2017, International Ocean Discovery Program(IODP) Expedition 369 successfully recovered deep-seacores from the Bight and Mentelle Basins. These cores are providing new insights into a series of key scientific questions, notably the sedimentary and volcanic evolution of these basins, and the rise and collapse of the Cretaceous Greenhouse at sub-polar paleolatitudes. The cores also comprise the most significant geologic data sets acquired from these localities and have the potential to change perspectives on their petroleum prospectivity. In this talk, key findings will be presented from the five sites drilled (one from the Bight Basin and four from the Mentelle Basin) and their implications for exploration along the southern margin of Australia will be addressed. In addition to this, the talk will also look into life on board the JOIDES Resolution during this two-month expedition.
