PESA QLD – Technical Lunch, 25th May – Dr. Sue Vink

Thursday, May 25, 2017 @ 12:15 - 14:00

Event Categories:

Guest Speaker: Dr. Sue Vink

Sue is a Principal Research Fellow in the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry at the University of Queensland. She has more than 15 years in hydrochemistry in a wide variety of settings. She has worked with the mining industry to improve water management practices in relation to climate variation, integrated water quality/quantity interactions and water releases to aquatic ecosystems. She collaborates with the Centre for Coal Seam Gas on a variety of projects including characterising hydrocarbons and indicators of hydraulic connectivity and consequences for hydrochemistry.

PESA QLD is very pleased to have secured Dr Sue Vink to present the May technical lunch session.

Dr Vink has vast experience in the hydrodynamics of QLD sedimentary basins, with particular emphasis on the basins which contain prolific Coal Seam Gas resources.

PESA QLD is pleased to have Sue present her latest work to the members.

The Water Chemistry Atlas was developed to aid analysis of multidisciplinary groundwater hydrogeochemistry datasets. The web based 3D visualisation and database system displays water bores and wells including stratigraphy, casing charts and aquifers. Geological models developed using commonly available software packages ( e.g. SKUA/GO-CAD from Paradigm) can be imported and displayed with the bore and well information. The system is password protected to limit access to confidential data sets. An integrated QA/QC system allows the user to extract water level and geochemistry data using user specific criteria. Data can be screened by geological formation and aquifer. Water quality data can be analysed using a variety of standard geochemistry plots, including piper and stiff diagrams, line plots and scatter plots. Geological cross-sections can also be drawn with nearby bores represented. The system allows users to interrogate disparate datasets without requiring specialist software. The system is being used by the public, CSG company water managers and community liaison.
