PESA QLD – Evening Technical Meeting, 22nd June – Brenton Richards

Thursday, June 22, 2017 @ 17:00 - 19:30

Event Categories:

Guest Speaker: Brenton Richards

Brenton Richards is a Senior Geologist with Origin Energy in Brisbane, Australia. He has worked for numerous Australian operators on a range of conventional and unconventional oil and gas exploration, appraisal and development projects across Australia and New Zealand. Brenton received his B.Sc. from the Queensland University of Technology.

This month, PESA QLD is trialling a new technical meeting format – PESA AT NIGHT.

In an attempt to reach members who can’t ordinarily attend lunch technical sessions, PESA QLD is trialling an evening technical session to be held at the Stock Exchange Hotel.

PESA continues the Geomechanics theme, following on from the well-attended Geomechanics Course and Technical Lunch presented by Dr Tingay back in March.

This month, PESA QLD is very pleased to have Mr Brenton Richards present the June technical session, presenting his own application of Geomechanics workflows to Hydrocarbon Exploration.

PESA QLD is certain that Brenton’s talk will have wide appeal, and we encourage members to support this new PESA AT NIGHT meeting format.  Member feedback is welcomed.

In February 2017 Origin announced the discovery of a material shale gas resource within the Beetaloo Sub-Basin on behalf of the Beetaloo Joint Venture (Origin Energy, Sasol and Falcon Oil & Gas). The announcement followed completion of extended production testing and confirmation of the reservoir deliverability of the Velkerri Formation at the Amungee NW-1H well.

Shale gas reservoir performance is governed by a balance between reservoir storage, transmissibility and geomechanics. Adequate geomechanical characterisation of a target reservoir is therefore a prerequisite in making informed decisions regarding drilling, completion and development strategies.

Prior to drilling and completing the Amungee NW-1H well, Origin had drilled two vertical wells; Kalala S-1 and Amungee NW-1. These wells provided the necessary data to produce the first pass petrophysical and geomechanical models of the Velkerri Formation. The presentation will focus on the geomechanical characterisation of the Velkerri Formation and share some of the key observations to date.
