Guest Speaker: Dr. Walter Pickel

Walter has been working and teaching as a geologist since 1986. He received his PhD from the Rheinisch Westfälische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen, Germany in 1991, where he continued to work until 1998. He joined CSIRO Petroleum in Sydney, Australia as a senior research scientist in 1999. In 2003 he joined Harold Read & Associates and co-founded Coal & Organic Petrology Services P/L in Sydney in 2004, of which he was the managing director. Since 2017 he is the sole owner of the company, which is now trading as Organic Petrology Services.
Apart from teaching at Aachen University, he has been giving classes and workshops at Cologne University, in Chile, Indonesia, Iran and Australia and has taught various short courses in organic petrology on behalf of ICCP (International Committee of Coal and Organic Petrology) and TSOP (The Society of Organic Petrology). He has worked in projects in petroleum exploration, coal exploration, geological studies related to depositional environments and tectonics and in environmental projects in many countries.
He is a member of the ICCP since 1991 where he convenes various working groups. He was awarded the Reinhardt Thiessen Medal  for his contribution to the advancement of organic petrology in 2015.

Title:
The use of organic petrology in petroleum exploration – advantages and pitfalls

Speakers:

Talk Summary:
The presentation uses various case studies to show the particulate organic matter that can be seen microscopically in sediments, ranging from modern lake sediments to high maturity sediments. It highlights the advantages of organic petrology and its methods, its pitfalls and the advantages of combining results from organic petrology with those from other techniques and what information other than vitrinite reflectance and maturity can be gained.
