Guest Speaker: Alan Fernie

Alan graduated from St Andrews University in Scotland with a BSc. (Hons) in Physics. He is an experienced geoscientist with global technical experience and well-developed commercial and management skills acquired in senior positions in a range of E&P operating company roles.

In a career spanning 43 years Alan started with BP in 1975 in the North Sea and progressed through the technical stream working in the Middle East, China, South America and UK on several successful exploration and development projects.

Alan left BP in 1989 to join Sun International in management positions in North Sea/Europe and then as Country Manager in Argentina. Sun International became Maxus in 1993.

Alan joined Ampolex in Argentina to assist with the acquisition and management of exploration and production assets, including the Aguarague field complex acquired from YPF.  Alan moved from Argentina to Sydney with the Ampolex international team in 1995 and was instrumental in Ampolex’s successful growth effort which led to the acquisition of the Cepu TAC in Indonesia, where >1.0 billion boe of oil and gas has since been discovered.

After the Ampolex takeover by Mobil Alan joined Santos as Offshore Exploration Manager and in the period 1997 to 2001 directed the exploration effort towards several commercial oil and gas fields including Legendre, John Brookes, Reindeer/Caribou and the Pitcairn/Mutineer/Norfolk/Exeter complex.

During 2001/02 Alan was consulting with RISC, an established corporate advisory group, advising companies such as Woodside, Shell, BP, CNOOC, BHP, Santos and several smaller companies on corporate activity, M&A, acquisitions and divestments and strategy.

In 2002 Alan joined the proto-Horizon Oil and assisted the management team to add reserves in China and introduce new business activity, including the Maari Field.  After a year out from mid-2004 to undertake new ventures activity for Santos in Iran, Libya, Egypt and Algeria, Alan returned to Horizon Oil as General Manager Exploration and Development. In the period 2005-2018 Horizon developed the Maari and China fields and improved its position in PNG, adding significant reserves through drilling.

Over the years Alan has developed expert knowledge of the global E&P business, including the characteristics of many major hydrocarbon provinces, the companies and players and the ways and means to conduct successful business at a senior level.  He has been successful at finding large oil and gas reserves and in executing many commercial agreements.
