PESA NSW Christmas Party Thursday 7th December 2017

Presented by Dr Andre Coffa

Title:
Toolebuc’ing the Trend of Unconventional Shale Analysis with Play Based Exploration

Summary:

The Early Cretaceous Toolebuc Formation shale is laterally extensive throughout most of the Eromanga and Carpentaria Basins. The unit is reputedly one of the richest source rocks in Australia, which would make it ideal as an unconventional shale play. When penetrated in wells, high mud gas and drilling cuttings fluorescence is observed. As a result, E&P companies have considered the Toolebuc as a potential unconventional play for years. Several regional assessments have focussed on mapping depth, thickness, maturity, total organic carbon (TOC), mineralogy, and gas composition. A majority of these assessments have found the shale to be immature, possibly due to the formation being shallower than 800 meters (SS) through most of its extent.  Hence, the trend up to this point has been to ignore the Toolebuc as an exploration target.

Recent studies and well penetrations closer to the centre of the underlying Cooper Basin have shown the Toolebuc to be deep and thick enough to be mature and prospective as an unconventional shale play target. In order to effectively explore for and develop the huge potential resource, highly prospective regions of the Toolebuc play trend must be tested. The best way to effectively target the extensive Toolebuc formation is through “sweet spot” mapping. The ‘play-based exploration’ methodology, usually reserved for conventional plays, can be adapted for the evaluation of unconventional resources. This approach can be used to effectively identify “sweet spots” and results in ‘chance-of-success’ maps for hydrocarbon generation, retention, and pore volume. The resultant maps can be combined with other maps (i.e., surface access, suitability for stimulation, etc.) to assess the best areas to explore and test this potentially prolific unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir.
