Seismic data from eastern Australian basins are dominated by coal reflectors. Coals are flat lying and go on forever, from an interpretation point of view what could be easier? There is a lot of complexity in coal seams that coal geologists have known about forever, and that petroleum geologists are now coming to grips with. At the coal mine level, geologists are interested in seam geometry , whereas conventional petroleum geologists are more interested in channel sands between the coals.…
