Teacher Earth Science Education Programme |

The Teacher Earth Science Education Programme (TESEP) is gaining momentum with a plan to gain significant sponsorship to support the initiative over the next few years. The main objective of TESEP is to place an earth science teacher in as many schools as possible during the next couple of years. Such teachers, trained in earth and environmental science (EES), will encourage a rich interchange and sharing of diverse content between EES and physical sciences (physics, chemistry and biology) and geography/studies of society and environment (SOSE). Students will be exposed to the critical link between EES, resources and Australia’s economy and gain an awareness of future trade and professional career paths in the energy/minerals and environmental sciences related industries. PESA has provided seed funding to start the TESEP programme and some of the funding has been used to pay a geological/outreach teacher consultant and state co-ordinator teachers. Lists of teachers interested in participating in TESEP, including secondary school EES, Science and geography teachers, are being compiled by Jill Stevens (jill.stevens@exxonmobil.com). These teachers will fill out a feedback questionnaire on EES teaching resources that they believe are required to achieve the goals of the programme. State co-ordinators will then plan the topics to be taught and near term focus for the future TESEP work. Once the resourcing requirements are in place the challenge will be to form a cross-organisational vehicle to generate significant funding for the next two to three years. The national secondary teachers’ conference was recently held in Perth in conjunction with an international education conference. The conference presented an opportunity for PESA to raise the TESEP profile with teachers. A range of PESA education related posters and flyers available to participants proved very popular. In addition to these national earth science related initiatives, PESA Vic/Tas branch has also been active in preparing education material that is specific to the oil industry, including oil sample kits and posters that will be available to teachers.
