PGS Victorious In The 2004 Beach Cricket Challenge

An under-strength PGS coalition successfully challenged an inter-national ConocoPhillips lineup for the 15th Beach Cricket trophy, held at Trigg Beach, Western Australia, on April 2nd, 2004.

In perfect conditions, PGS batted first and, after a slow start, they compiled a modest total, mainly due to some excellent fielding and tight bowling by the experienced ConocoPhillips all-stars.

The highlight of the innings for PGS was a giant six by newcomer Lincoln Tovey. Helped by a gentle sea breeze he sent the ball into the stratosphere much to the delight of his team. One team member is quoted as saying, “I didn’t think Gilly could hit the ball that far”.

After the tea (beer) interval ConocoPhillips set about their run chase in drastic style, losing early wickets. It soon became obvious that baseball-style batting was not the best tactic given the unpredictable bounce of the Trigg swash zone!

Outstanding performances on the day went to Lawrence Hansen for Bowling, Lincoln Tovey for Batting, Sophia Lister for Fielding, Carlo Bevilacqua for Competitiveness, Bill Ashby for Honest Umpiring and Mark Devereux for Scoring.

A post-match presentation and meal (sponsored by Sun Microsystems) was enjoyed at the surf club by players, families and supporters.

The challenge for 2005 has been laid down, with PGS and ConocoPhillips vowing to meet again on Trigg beach next summer to carry on the tradition of beach cricket, which started between Ampolex and Digicon in 1989.
