President’s Report

People and Organisations Caught Doing Things Right

On behalf of PESA Members everywhere:

  • PESA’s gratitude goes to Bronwyn Camac – the outgoing PESA Federal Executive Secretary – for Bron’s valuable volunteer services over the years as a PESA SA Branch Officer; PESA’s Federal Executive Secretary and PESA’s EABS2 Organising Committee Secretary. We are fortunate that Bron will keep on keeping-on in support of EABS2.
  • Goodonya Evelina Paraschivoiu. Evelina has volunteered to be our incoming PESA Federal Executive Secretary.
  • To all the volunteers collaborating to assure success for PESA services and events – GOODONYA x 109 ! The top quality and generous people who join PESA committees are the backbone of our society. Think about it – these people donate large chunks of their precious time and valuable skills to sustain a vibrant E&P community. The collaborative efforts of the following teams deserve our thanks for delivering great services and events:

    Six PESA Branch Committees – ACT, NSW, Qld/NT, SA, Vic/Tas, and WA

    PESA Publications Committee (PPC) and its teams – the PESA News Committee (PNC) and PESA Website Committee (PWC)

    PESA Education Committee (PEC)

    PESA Membership Committee (PMC)

Current Organising Committees for:

  • ASEG-PESA Conference – August 2004 (see details below);
  • 2nd Eastern Australasian Basins Symposium – September 2004 (EABS2 – see details below);
  • 4th West Australian Basins Symposium, with the AAPG International Conference – Perth, October 2006;
  • 28th PESA Queensland Symposium – Brisbane, September 2005; and
  • 34th International Geologic Congress – Brisbane, August 2012 (with the member societies of the Australian Geoscience Council)

PESA people are also providing support for the NT Government’s Central Australian Basins Symposium (covering mineral and petroleum) in Alice Springs - August 2005. Please do get in touch with your Branch Officers if you want to share in the satisfaction of creating good things that ‘go around, so come around’.

  • It is unanimous. PESA’s Board and Members agree that Ian Grierson (PESA NSW & ENCOM) is a very worthy recipient of PESA’s 2004 Distinguished Membership Award, and Peter Bailie (PESA WA & TGS NOPEC) is likewise deserving of PESA’s 2004 Meritorious Service Award. More praise for both Ian and Peter is presented in this edition of PESA News.
  • GOODONYA to the PESA ACT Branch (especially Barry Bradshaw, Andrew Barrett and Andrew Krassay – all GA), Rob Willink (Origin), John Hughes (Santos), Peter Gill (Deakin University) and Janet Hann (Santos) for raising the bar and delivering an excellent PESA Industry Review at APPEA in March 2004.

PESA’s Industry Review and Achievement Awards At The APPEA Conference - 29th March 2004

Top marks go to Dr Robbert Willink (PESA, Origin and APPEA) for revitalising our Annual Industry Review with an Academy Awards style presentation of PESA Awards at APPEA 2004. Thanks are also extended to the companies nominating for the awards and to both Peter Power and Bruce McKay for joining me on the judging panel. The details to be published in Volume 2 of the 2004 APPEA Journal will be a valuable snapshot of Australian exploration endeavours. The final contenders for PESA Exploration Awards (for 2003) were, in alphabetic order, Amity, Anadarko, Apache, ARC, AWE, Beach, BHPBilliton, ChevronTexaco, Cooper, Encana, ExxonMobil, Fusion, Hardman, Innamincka, Inpex Alpha, Itochu, Kerr McGee, Lakes, Mitsui, Mosaic, Roc, Samson, Santos, Shell, Strike, Stuart, Sunshine, Vernon E Faulconer, Voyager, Wandoo and Woodside. In brief – from amongst very competitive world-class candidates – the truly significant 2003 Australian exploration efforts and outcomes were recognised by PESA as listed in Table 1.

Lessons Learnt

On the basis of 27 years working in the private sector and 30 months experience in government, I conclude that there are three key actions which give organisations leverage and respect, and these are: (1) building trust, (2) reducing uncertainties by priority and, of course, (3) having fun. These actions perpetuate organisational health, wealth, happiness and influence. Go for it with vigour – you will enjoy the journey and rewards.
