The front cover image, released by Esso/BHPB, is a rendering of the Top of Latrobe surface and was derived from the recently acquired Northern Fields 3D seismic dataset. Acquisition of this survey commenced on the October 21st, 2001 and was completed by July 20th , 2002. The survey covered an area of 4,060 km² and cost approximately $60 million to acquire and process. This is the largest proprietary 3D survey ever acquired in Australia and one of the largest acquired by ExxonMobil worldwide. For the first time a single continuous 3D dataset, linking all of the major northern producing oil and gas fields of the Gippsland Basin, has been acquired thus enabling the construction of a true regional 3D structural and stratigraphic framework which will be a significant aid to future exploration and production activities.
