John Carmody

G'day for the last time,
My two year term as PESA Federal President is now up and my place is being taken by the ebullient, irrepressible Barry Goldstein. As all my thoughts and farewells are contained in my President's report to members, it is reproduced here.

Keep in touch and my best wishes to y'all.

Introduction
This report is delivered on behalf of the Federal Executive of PESA Ltd to the 20th Annual General Meeting held in Melbourne on Sunday March 23rd 2003, covering the calendar year 2002.

Financial Position
The Annual Financial Report for the year ended December 31st 2002 shows that PESA is continuing to operate on a sound financial basis.

The overall financial position of your society at the end of 2002 was cash of $761,134. Whilst there was an operating loss of $44,568 compared with an operating surplus the previous year of $133,700 there are very good reasons for this difference. Your Federal Executive Committee made the decision that the funds should be used to the benefit of PESA members rather than just sitting in the bank. Specifically, projects that have incurred additional expenditure over the past 12 months include:
(i) development of the PESA website database ($59,745);
(ii) a shortfall of $16,000 in sponsorships for the PESA Distinguished Lecture tours; and
(iii) several other expenses increased, and in some cases expected revenues were below forecast.

(For full financial details, please refer to the PESA Treasurer's report for 2002.)

Apart from further costs to be incurred in the establishment of the website database (and these are one off costs), the increase in costs across many normal budgeted and recurring items has made it necessary, in your Committee's opinion, to increase member-ship fees to offset these additional costs. The new membership fees will be $50 p.a. ($55 including GST), which still makes PESA one of the cheapest professional bodies in the world and, when you look at the services provided (and to be provided), it is still superb value for money.

The society's assets are adequate to support both the major projects of the society and the education programmes that are being organised nationally for the benefit of the members.

I would like to express the society's gratitude to Brett Fullarton of KPMG for his support in auditing the Society's records.

Officers
By the time you read this edition of PESA News, the PESA AGM will have been held in Melbourne on the Sunday before the APPEA Conference on March 23rd 2003.
The Officers for 2002 were:

• President John Carmody
• Vice President Barry Goldstein
• Secretary Gaz Bisht
• Treasurer Max Williamson
• Immediate Ahmad Tabassi Past-President
• ACT Andrew Krassay
• NSW Chris Carty
• Qld Barry Willis
• SA Steve Mackie
• Vic/Tas Tom Bernecker
• WA David Cliff

The Federal board (Executive) met five times during the year to discuss and organise PESA business. I would like to thank all the members of the Executive for their support and constructive inputs to board meetings and PESA operations.

During the past year several initiatives were progressed. These include further develop-ment of the PESA Website and the PESA Website Database, and implementation of the PESA education and scholarships programmes.

My thanks to Gaz Bisht (Federal Secretary), Max Williamson (Treasurer) and Rowley Butters (Company Secretary), who have worked extremely hard during the year. The work done by these gentlemen has made my job much easier and ensured the smooth operation of PESA's management. Also, my special thanks to our Federal Vice President, Barry Goldstein, for his support and enthusiasm and, of course, to all the committee members for the same reason.

Membership
This year the membership has shown a dramatic increase over the previous years taking the society membership levels to record heights. It is pleasing to note that increased membership has been general across all professions, whilst the most significant proportional increase in the location of members has come from overseas, which we see as an indirect benefit of the PESA website (www.pesa.com.au). The membership growth is crucial for our society and I encourage all members not only to renew their membership if they have not already done so, but also to encourage colleagues and friends who may not be members to join.

PESA Publications
The PESA Publications Sub-Committee is responsible for PESA News, PESA Journal and the PESA Website. The sub-committee consisted of myself and:

• Chairman – David Cliff
• past Federal President – Jim Durrant
• PESA News Editor – Adrian Williams
• PESA Journal Editor-in-Chief – Peter Baillie
• Past President Publications Sub-Committee – Grant Ellis
• Treasurer – Rowley Butters

The sub-committee met regularly throughout the year to oversee all PESA publications and ensure that they functioned smoothly and were financially sound. Each State Branch also provided an editor to liaise with the Publications Sub-Committee:

• Damien Ryan, ACT
• Malcolm Galloway, NSW
• Shalene McClure, Qld
• Simon Brealey, SA
• Kevin Lanigan, Vic/Tas
• Brian Wickins, WA

Our thanks to Grant Ellis, who has retired as Publications Sub-Committee President, for all his hard work over the years. Grant has generously agreed to remain on the Committee as an advisor.

PESA Publications consist of:

PESA News
The society's flagship, PESA News, sets a worldwide industry standard in quality of presentation. It is maintaining its high standard and continues to be an excellent forum for our members' news, gossip, technical articles, industry news, etc. The cost of publication is covered by advertising revenue, so it does not erode society funds.

Adrian Williams continues, for the twelfth consecutive year (surely some sort of record!), as the editor of the PESA News. With great efficiency and tireless nature, Adrian has kept PESA News in the position that it is now in. Adrian's skills and dedication are admirable and I hope he stays on board for at least another ten years. On behalf of all the society's members, I would like to pass my sincere appreciation to Adrian and wish him all the very best in his own job as well.

PESA Journal
Due to the tremendous difficulty in obtaining papers, it was decided to discontinue regular issues of this Journal. The main reason behind the shortage of supply of technical papers was the success of the Eastern Australian Basins Symposium (EABS) and the Western Australian Basins Symposium (WABS) which attracted all the available papers (in a way, a nice problem!) The option still remains though for special editions of the PESA Journal as the need arises.

Our thanks to Peter Baillie and his editorial board for all their hard work on the PESA Journal (don't go away, Peter, I know you'll be needed again in the future!).

PESA Website
The PESA Website has expanded considerably over the past year. The Website has information on PESA, PESA publications, Events, Committees, Membership and Links. Development of the Website Database is proceeding and will be of considerable benefit to PESA Members.

PESA Publisher
Brian Wickins of RESolutions continues as the publisher of PESA News and manager of the PESA website. His marketing skills are primarily responsible for the commercial success of the Publications division. The quality of PESA News is a tribute to Brian and all his staff at RESolutions' hard work and skills.

Western Australian Basins Symposium (WABS)
Another extremely successful (both technically and financially) WABS was held in Perth in October 2002. Our congratula-tions to Chairman Peter Baillie and his team for a great effort.

I have received many comments that WABS and EABS (Eastern Australian Basins Symposium) are now the foremost technical conferences in the industry and we will certainly continue this standard. EABS and WABS will now alternate every two years, with the next EABS to be held in Adelaide in 2004.

Federal Secretariat
Rowley Butters continues to manage the PESA Secretariat with his usual efficiency. Rowley also continues his role as Company Secretary. He often works far beyond the call of duty and our thanks also go to his wife Bev for her hard work for PESA.

PESA Education/Training Initiative
Phil Lock has taken over the reins of the PESA Education Sub-Committee with the assistance of most of the members of the Victorian organising committee for the last EABS Conference (great to see all that talent not going to waste!)

Over the past 12 months PESA members were surveyed to identify the preferred type and structure of planned future workshops and seminars.

The results of this survey indicated a need for stronger ties with our fellow professional organisations (ASEG/SPE) and stronger co-ordination of visiting lecturers. As the anticipated education initiatives will require a greater workload, we have elected to trial the University of Sydney's Earth Resources Foundation (ERF) for 12 months.

(For the past 20 years Kim Wright (ERF) has been working the logistics for the PESA ESSO Distinguished Lecture tours.)

We believe that these initiatives will ultimately lead to a better and more efficient PESA Technical Education service to members.

Distinguished Membership
There were no nominations for Distinguished Membership this year.

Final Comments
I have found my two years as PESA Federal President a fascinating and rewarding experience. It enabled me to make contact with as many PESA members as possible and get their feedback on various issues pertaining to PESA.

My task was made considerably easier by all the help I have received from the Federal Executive Committee and in particular the PESA Publications Sub-Committee and the PESA Education Sub-Committee. There are many people who work behind the scenes who have also contributed to the success of PESA, and my thanks to them as well. Without all their assistance, PESA would simply not function.

The society is still heavily reliant on volunteers whose dedication and the generosity of their employers, make the success of PESA possible. To maintain and further improve your society the involvement of these volunteers is essential.

PESA is one of the cheapest and most efficient technical societies in the world and this is due to the support of its members and their companies. Keep up the good work!

I would like to wish our incoming President, Barry Goldstein, and his team (Bronwyn Camac - Secretary and Mike Hanzalik - Treasurer) and Dave Cliff, our incoming Vice-President my best wishes. I know that with their enthusiasm and hard work PESA will continue to move ahead.

Finally, to you the members, thanks for all your support and all the best for a successful 2003.

John Carmody
